Flood Critters
Today's Topics:
1. Bt-i to control mosquitoes with all this flooding/ponds
With all this rain, flooding, standing water and in our ponds, we need to be proactive in the control of mosquitoes. One of the products that we gardeners use is...
Bt israelensis (Bt-i) - Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis
Bt-i is a highly specific biological pesticide for use against mosquito, black fly and fungus gnat larvae. It may be applied safely to irrigation and roadside ditches, pastures, marshes and ponds, water gardens, flower pots, bird baths, rain gutters...any place there is standing water! Once ingested, Bt-i kills 95-100% of mosquito larvae within 24 hours. Highly effective because it kills these pests before they become biting adults. Will not harm people, pets, wildlife or fish. (From PlanetEarth website)
The commercial, home gardener version is often sold as mosquito donuts/dunks.
I stopped off at a local discount store (with a "garden center" attached) that didn't have any.
Called someone to call a few places for me while I was on the road, and none at any place called except a local garden center; The price for two donuts on a card was $9.99. I couldn't believe it. I took it up to the counter and expressed my concern that someone may have incorrectly priced the item. The young lady at the counter mentioned that a lot of their products were going up, and scanned it. It came up $9.99 (that's 4.99 each!). I suggested that she mention the high price to her manager and that I'd go elsewhere.
I drove to a "farm store" (you can proabably guess which one) and they had the same brand two donuts on a card for about $6.50 each. I broke down and bought the last four cards, as I knew I needed them, and with the weather so wet, I'd better grab them while I could. (Sounds like speculative buying, doesn't it?)
I came home and checked online. I found them being sold in bulk of 20 dounts for approx $1/donut, although the shipping would increase that unit cost a bit. I bought 20, hoping they'll arrive before my other eight are used up.
