Afghan Journalism Student Tortured for Distributing Documents Advocating Equality for Women
June 2, 2008
An Afghan appeals court transferred journalism student Sayed Parwez Kambakhsh to a hospital for tests on Sunday after he said he was tortured by security forces. The 23-year-old student was sentenced to death in January for distributing information regarding the role of women in Islam.
A three judge panel in Mazar-i- Sharif found Kambakhsh guilty of "distributing blasphemous material.""My client has been tortured while in custody. He has suffered a fracture to his nose and damage to his wrist," said Mohammad Afzal Nuristani, Kambakhsh's attorney, in court on Sunday, according to AFP. "Kambakhsh should be examined and released in the light of these new facts revealed by the defense.
What with confessions extracted under torture - an unjust procedure - and the constant pressure, everything indicates that the trial that resulted in Kambakhsh being sentenced to death did not respect the basic principles of Afghan due process.
The judicial authorities should take note of this," said Reporters Without Borders in a statement.

Greenconsciousness Notes: Why is the US allowing this to happen when the Afghan constitution supposedly includes women's rights?
The whole purpose of intervention in the middle east was to improve human rights with the assumption that democracy would reduce the threats to the US from Islamic Fascism.
After it was clear thee were no WMDs, that was the core value sold to citizens to gain their support for the war. That is why, I as a feminist supported the war - to gain opportunities to increase human rights for women inside Muslim countries. Has US blood bought us nothing for women's human rights in Afghanistan?
If Bush allows this journalist’s imprisonment to go on, I support hanging him or at least some legal action against him and the Haliburton executives as war profiteers.
I know, I know, in reality we can do nothing against Bush but we can win concessions from McCain on this issue.
Once again a politician needs us. Feminists should not ignore the opportunity.
We can ask McCain what his position on women's rights is inside the countries where he want to "win" the battle. We can ask for promises to make women's rights a priority in his middle east policies. We can attempt to gain his intervention in this journalist case in order to prove his sincerity.
We can only do this as a mass movement. There is a whole list of Hillary Bloggers at the Reclusive Leftist threatening action because of the way she is treated. This is the action. To organize around demanding that McCain show his commitment to including women’s rights in his foreign policy. This is the power you have and you can use it if bloggers who support women begin to ask McCain to act for women to prove his sincerity. This is how you show BO what he won with his misogynist campaign.
I hope women do not stand idly by supporting BO as they did Kerry and ignore the pressure they should be putting on all candidates to achieve human rights for women in the middle east.
Feminists should use this election to win promises to defend the rights of women in the middle east from McCain. Feminists abandoned these women for the last 5 years to follow the male left. Redeem yourself. You don't have to vote for McCain. But you must begin to act for women where ever you can. Stop trusting the democrats to act for women. Become political.
Yes I am screaming. Please women, do not let yet another opportunity pass by while you gather in lock step behind a party that has shown total contempt for women all during the BO campaign. Be flexible and use this opportunity for women. Save your sisters and you WILL save Your Self. You will organize your self into a political movement. Politicians and organizations will respond.
Hillary's bloggers can start by demanding McCain secure the release of this journalist. McCain can fly him here to the US study at one of our Universities. McCain can begin to tell us what he will do for women in Afghan and Iraq. We can ask for domestic violence shelters, schools, armed women's police forces to guard the shelters. Let us educate McCain as to what supporting women means in terms of his Iraq and Afghan policies.
