And I went down to the demonstration and got what I needed...
To get my fair share of abuse
Singing, "We're gonna vent our frustration
If we don't we're gonna blow a 50-amp fuse"
Sing it to me now...
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well you just might find
You get what you need.
I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
can't afford another child
But WI just banned the pill.
You can't always get what you want, no!
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want (no)
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need
Oh yes! Woo!Hoo!

But there was no abuse. I must say it was great. The post immediately below this one gives the issues we were protesting. This post is just about my feelings. I am glad I went.
The best of the old days - sisterhood. LOTS of women - serious women - at least half of them were my age and the other half much younger. We stood around the way you do when gathering at 11:30 am - smiling till our cheeks cracked as more and more women came.
We were at the WI State Capitol, on the steps up to the doors, filling up all those steps, shuffling closer and closer to the doors.
********************************************************
We could not get into the Capital gallery to watch those mother killers vote our rights away because the gallery WAS FILLED WITH THE WOLF PEOPLE. The wolf people were there protesting the passing of legislation allowing the just delisted wolf to be hunted with dogs and allowing trappers to make money by placing traps in our parks (to kill our dogs and cats) and allowing 12 year olds with bows and arrows to go killing in the parks. The wolf people are my people. I loved that they were there too.
UPDATE:
**********************************************8
The steps up to the Capitol were full up. There was a statue of Lady Liberty (the boys call it Forward) on the first layer of steps and soon she was covered with signs saying "Stop the War on Women".
There was a band there - horns and other instruments - playing rocking versions of Solidarity Forever and the Battle Hymn of the Republic. A huge drummer man was there at the bottom of the steps with the war drum. Soon there was a sea of signs, people singing. Then another group led us all in singing; "we are a gentle angry people fighting fighting for our lives". And all the time the drum was pounding out the beat. I bet they heard that drum inside.
Everyone was taking pictures reminding me I should have brought my camera after all. Maybe I can find some pictures on the WI Planned Parenthood Facebook page later. Fox News rolled up as well as some other stations and the speeches began. Lousy mike system so the women did the occupy thing and shouted line by line to those in the back. Speeches should have been a little shorter but I enjoyed them. I noticed women with Wolf signs in the crowd. My sisters.
Then someone fainted way up in front and here is where I really gained a profound respect for the organizers. They made a path for the EMTs through the crowd. The mood turned shocked. We all went rigid with concern for the afflicted. Then an organizer I met at the first rally in Janesville came through the crowd shouting, "we are going to march around the capitol" and she led everyone off the steps so the medical stuff could happen and the mood of the crowd could be charged again. Yes, I said "charged". And soon the energy was high again. These organizers had the skill of high priestesses. They knew how to move, build and focus energy.
So our line was about two blocks long and we were shouting; Hey Hey Mister Mister - Keep your laws off my sister, and This is what Democracy Looks Like, and Can You Hear us Now, and Its my body, its my life, its my right to decide. All of these were call and response - the priestesses would shout something and those were the lines my group would shout back - like this, "What does democracy look like? This is what democracy looks like". It was fun. We also had one that just shouted, "The G.O.P. sucks" which was started by the ladies in the back. I shouted it out with everyone else.
Bus loads of tourists clapped as we marched by - men cheered - horns honked. It was the best.
I found a parking ticket on my car when it was over. $20.00. Even that blow could not bring me down. So you can just imagine how right everything felt.

Here is the organizer who led us off the steps when there was a medical emergency - she is the one with the sign in front of her and there she is again with the bull horn.
Yep, liberty of contract and all that Republican tommyrot -- out the window. Oh, and did I mention? This same august body also voted to require abstinence only sex education in schools. The rationale behind both of these measures?
All your vaginas belong to us.One other explanation might be the giant iceberg known as "recall" into which the Republican ship of fools is about to crash. The panicky nickwits in charge of this circus act are trying to get what they can before they get the boot from the electorate.

How absolutely wonderful! I can feel the energy just reading this. Blessings to all the sisters and brothers that took part. :)
and my friend Linda was just saying --- how can working women get to these demonstrations and I answered:
That is why the br-rill-iant organizers held it from noon to one – lunch hour – same as we did in 1972 to desexigrate the want ads in the Mil Journal (at that time employment ads were classified, Help wanted Male and Help wanted Female).
The women would come out on their lunch hour to march around the Mil Journal building.
I admire these organizers who know the reality of the lives of women.
But there were women from all over the state there – I was talking to one woman from Burlington wherever the hell that is……………..
Burlington, Vermont? I live in the sticks. Beautiful country, but not much for organizing a rally.
Albany, our capital is a little over an hour away, so lunch hour wouldn't work. I love these photos!!
No I think it was Burlington, WI - I have heard of it but who knows where it actually is -
New York is a whole different planet than WI - those NY women are gearing up but I don't know how they will organize -- when we did the demand for an anti rape squad in the Milwaukee police dept., Brenda went and modeled our plan on New York's anti rape unit -- later they made a TV show modeled on New York's anti rape unit -- Law and Order Sensitive Crimes Unit --- the thing I learned about NY is that in the city they break everything up into Burroughs -- so I would guess the organizing there isimilarlyry divided into Burroughs and counties.
Here is the deal -- you do not move until you see something, feel the need, the desire, and then how will become clear. Everyone contributes where they are -- many fire ants are more deadly than one tiger --
The thing that launched Mil WAR were these two brilliant, refined, ladylike, conservative statisticians who would never go to a demonstration. But they created a study which documented that one in four Milwaukee women did not report rape because they were afraid of how the police would treat them.
In 1980 they had good reason to be afraid of the rape cops who were in the Vice Squad at that time and thought all women were prostitutes if they went out at night alone. Much like Rush Limbaugh today.
Those women who did the study and analyzed the results -- talked to the newspaper a few times. And then they were gone. One day I looked around and noticed they had been gone for a while. Their study launched a huge city wide three year movement which changed the police dept and the district attorneys office, helped bring down the police chief and mayor who had been in office over 15 years, provided the basis for rape prevention education. They never got the credit they deserved. I give them that here. Maybe they were angels.
Well the point is demonstrations are not the only way but it is critical to have fun along the way. I know that now. My biggest mistake was not being focused on making opportunities for everyone to have fun like the priestesses did yesterday at the demonstration. Lesson learned.
Oh it is spring here 70 degrees I am raking the mulch off the new growth today -- have to lose some weight -- my belly got big -- my muscles are weak. Hallelujah!
