Pajamas had to take chesler back to their all male writer's party
The first thing that happens when actual feminists (especially Ecofeminists) espouse views not yet accepted by the majority is that they are called racists by those opponents still attempting to avoid any responsibility for what they have made of their life. "White middle class racist". Boo Hoo. The number of presumptions that have to be made by thugs using this trip when dealing with an anonymous person on the Internet is breathtaking. Unwarranted presumptions which are ridiculous and false. But facts never got in the way of our blamer's manipulative guilt tripping. This once again happened to me when I was happily talking about MY love for animals manifesting in a vegan life style. In response to the whiner's first pitiful rants about how only the privileged can eat a plant based diet, I pointed out what Mrs Obama did recently about food deserts . Michele Obama has strong programs for her interest in nutrition, the latest being luring major producers to open groceries in food deserts creating 60,000 new jobs right off the bat. She has funded public gardens. Michelle created a decent school lunch nutritional program in the face of organized resistance from Agri-business which reaps huge profits from school lunch subsidies. Agi business's favorite talking point is "the Nanny state" as most of the people who use that phrase have full time nannies - an option unavailable to the working class. The fact that someone was eliminating one of her justifications outraged the blamer, so she attacked me personally. Naturally. Happens all the time. Boring. "You have your farmer's markets on land you stole from my people", she whined and called me an asshole. I laughed. "You white do-gooding women come to the reservation and tell us how to eat when you ruined our diet". I presume she was talking about nurses at the free clinic. "You bring your old cast off clothes to our dances. The poor cannot afford your white............bla bla bla". She had no idea as to my income or color and she did not care. It was a chance to parade the only thing a loser can be proud of which are martyrdom and victim hood If the thug had any influence with her own people she could ban whites from the clinic and the dance. But she doesn't so she feels special when she self rightously trashes those she disagrees with on line by claiming racial purity. Let's not mention where her people got the land. The bully can gain some support on line from those who do not have to live with her. It is all so stupid. I could attack in return, calling the self pitying name caller a thug and a bully, but why bother I don't think I ever had too much patience with racial bullies and class guilt trippers having actually been part of the civil rights movement unlike most of the name callers. And having listened to that trip all through the women's movement. "White middle class women". See: http://www.saidit.org/archives/jun06/Remembrance.html But after BO's political campaign which called the Clintons racist, I was over it for good. Whatever respect I did have for the race card was gone. I saw it as the last refuge of opportunists who had nothing else to use to legitimize their position. Worse, used by feminist academic writers to gain status and jobs at the expense of women who were writing from their own experience. I often wondered why white women so criticized didn't just say, "you do it", to their critics. You do all the research you feel I should have done and write the correct book you think I should have written. Or at least an article. Why waste all this energy attacking another women? And if a white woman did try to include other cultures in her analysis she would also be condemned for daring as a white to speak for non whites. Addition not subtraction is the feminist way.. We had more interesting inter-racial experiences in the anti-rape group I led in Mil which eventually was diverse. We were really sisters in the WAR, fighting rapists and talking with each other about our life stories. So we also talked out the controversial stuff without attacking. And we were all working class and poorer so we had that in common. I did really good outreach and also made mistakes which I still regret but all of that was real, not this false verbal diarrhea gotcha race card BS. Now I simply do not respond at all. Eat shit and die, is my attitude, the sooner the better. So it is delightful for me to read Chesler's last post. It is nice to know some of us can answer with grace and intelligence even if I can't anymore. What to Say to the Totalitarian Left on 9/11/11 Excerpt: I recently heard from a Canadian school psychologist who lives in Toronto and who has dual citizenship in Canada and the United States. He was "dismayed," outraged, saddened, and puzzled, and wanted me to explain to him how a feminist academic could have "hijacked a feminist conference in Quebec to express her feelings about how American foreign policy was totally responsible for the events of 9/11." Ever since then, Brooks Masterton has written to this particular academic every 9/11 about her "lack of compassion for the victims" and about her hypocrisy, given that she "Uses the freedoms she has in Canada as well as public funding to express outrageous ideas. I long ago asked her to consider how she would be received in Afghanistan if she pontificated about feminism and the need for female freedoms against male domination in all aspects of life. She would not survive for a week. While I defend her right to an opinion, I detest the way she goes about making her points and the extremely disrespectful, provocative and poisonous comments she makes. I am near retirement… but I still get angry enough to write to her every September to reminder her that she cannot make these comments without expecting to be called to account by others. I do believe that all that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to stay silent." Good women too, dear Dr. Masterton. Well, he had come to the right woman and to the right feminist. It so happens that I am actually, although only slightly, familiar with Sunera Thobani's so-called work. In 2006, I had been invited to keynote an international feminist conference at Cambridge University but was soon disinvited. Therefore, my critique of the multi-culturally relativist and postcolonial feminist academy's tragic failure to take a stand against Islamic gender apartheid coupled with its sacrifice of universal human rights and its essentially racist obsession with anti-racism rather than with sexism was never heard in England. A year later, I was asked to rebut a 2007 attack that Thobani at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, had launched against American feminists, myself included. She titled her piece: "White Wars: Western Feminism and the 'War on Terror.'" The Britain-based journal Feminist Theory published it but then approached me as well as two other feminists (Zillah Eisenstein and Judith Butler) for a response. I was the only one who agreed to respond. Here was a potential forum for what I might have said in Cambridge as well as my response to Thobani's attack. |
