Beyond Marriage to the 3rd Wave
This woman is a 3rd wave feminist dealing with an inter-sectional issue in a feminist way. That is, Polikoff is suggesting feminist policy & programs which meets the needs of women of all races and classes. Polikoff presents a woman identified solution to the lesbian problem of being unable to marry. The feminist solution reaches out from the traditional male construct to embrace a new way of distributing benefits, which strengthens Independence and Choice for the individual whom she treats as the primary unit.
These are solutions based on women's experienced needs not male fantasies about what women and children need.
Polikoff rejects the marriage model for the distribution of benefits. She said "marriage" itself should not confer benefits - benefits should belong to the individual to distribute at will. I particularly like that she thinks friends and mothers and daughters ought to be able to confer their benefits on each other as as individuals do through marriage.
It is feminist analysis applied to what might be considered an inter-sectional issue. But the lesbian issue did not replace feminism by simply applying the male marriage model to gays.
Instead the marriage model is replaced by a model which extends benefits to all women regardless of marital status. This is Feminist because the solution proposed meets the needs of all women to get the benefits of marriage rather than extending to gay women the sexist marriage model of distributing benefits in return for sexual service (which is a male identified position).
