CAN YOU HELP THE ANIMALS?

Pet rescuers from animal rescue groups large and small are on the ground doing the best they can under the horrible conditions in Louisiana.

These are all wonderful regular people who are devoting their own personal time, and money to help save these pets. Time is running out! There are an estimated 40,000 pets who still need rescuing.

Many are sick, dehydrated, starving, burned by toxic waters, wounded, and most of all scared! The rescuers have left behind their jobs, families and commitments to help with this effort and they desperately need your help!

How can you help?

1) Volunteer to go in person.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

These things may take a little time to work on so get started ASAP so you will be ready:

Bring a sleeping bag or tent or blankets and prepare to sleep on the ground or in your car. Its not four star accommodations, but you will be safe.

You NEED to get shots! Go to a local ER or walk in and see if they’d offer free shots or a discount for: Tetanus, typhoid, Hepatitis and whatever the medical professional recommends. You NEED to make sure YOU are SAFE and don’t get sick!

Bring an orange colored vest or similar bright color and stencil pet rescue on the back if possible.

You will need to go to a Kinko’s or similar printing / sign shops that can either make a magnetic sign for your car or can sell one that you can stencil yourself. You need it to read, “Disaster Animal Rescue” to be able to get into the area.

If you plan to fly remember that many airports will not have rental cars available, check around the airport or other airports and be sure you can get one. Also whether driving or flying, get as big an air-conditioned vehicle as possible for transport. See “UPDATES” for latest known air-travel info

Bring all the supplies you can both for rescue and for YOURSELF remember you are essentially there on your own and need to take care of yourself. Try to pick up some fresh food like subs (both veggie and meat) on your way in to give those who’ve been there a while some much needed decent food.

You should go with AT least one other person but probably no more than 4.

As with the supply list, solicit anything you can from local businesses friends and family and make sure you have enough gas.

If this list is unable to match you up with a partner in your area, go to www.craigslist.com for your area and try and form your own group.
