Property Battle Involves Animal Rights
A Madison property possibly worth a million dollars is being fought over by UW-Madison officials and animal rights activists.
Activists have an option to buy the property, which sits between the university's two primate research facilities.
The North Charter Street property's owner is Roger Charly, who operates Budget Bicycle.
Protesters resentful of the use of monkeys in scientific experiments at the UW facilities have picketed the buildings. Researchers say security is always a concern. "We're exercising increased caution due to the fact that people like Jeremy Beckham and Rick Bogle have actually moved into the community," said UW National Primate Research Center Director Joseph Kemnitz.
People such as activists Beckham and Bogle have literally moved in next door, trying to convert a bicycle parts warehouse into a exhibition hall to expose alleged primate mistreatment. "This looks like a thorn in their side, doesn't it?" said Bogle, of the Primate Freedom Project. "I mean, it's just this piece of narrow strip of private property right here between the Harlowe Lab and the Primate Center."
Charly told 27 News, he's neutral on the issue of scientific experimentation with primates. But Charly said he's been unsuccessful in trying to sell this property to the UW.
Officials with the Primate Freedom Project have a ninety day option to buy the property. Bogle said website solicitation for potential donors to buy bricks of the property's building, has drawn international interest. Bogle said a donor who wished to remain anonymous has already pledged nearly $700,000 to support this property's acquisition. "I think it's a done deal," said Bogle.
Charly said if the deal collapses, he's open again to an offer from UW officials. At one time, officials envisioned expanding the animal research facilities onto the property.
Charly won't reveal his specific asking price, but points out, a nearby, similar property, commanded a million bucks.
Animals rights activists targeted this location, because it was the only one of eight primate research centers nationwide with a vacant property this close.
UW-Madison officials say monkeys used in scientific research are monitored, and cared for.
"UW-Madison officials say monkeys used in scientific research are monitored, and cared for. "
GREENCONSCIOUSNESS SAYS: OH YEAH,the primates are well cared for - like the two who were burned alive slowly in a microwave disinfectant machine as they screamed and clung to one another because their researcher "forgot" to remove them from the cage before she sent it through the microwave. That is the level of care the primates get from the UW sadists who are paid with our tax dollars.
Go to the Primate website - see the pictures - give money till it hurts. It will not hurt you as much as it is now hurting our cousins the primates at the University of Wisconsin's primate lab in Madison Wisconsin. The animal rights movement has marched in front of those labs for 30 years and it has done no good. Big money supports those labs - and they have dinners and give themselves awards and talk about how irrational and reactive are the taxpayers who support them. This is their attitude"If the population wasn't so reactionary, maybe they'd pay more attention to what is logical, rational, and right, rather than what pisses them off at the moment." It does no good to reason with those people. We must remove their funding and their status. Then they can do studies urging us to shoot cats instead of directly torturing primates.
