Animals Have No Voice
I wish you all warm holiday wishes for the coming week and a very happy New Year! But please don't forget the 9,000+ monkeys in the laboratories here in our community who are also highly social like us and must spend every day of their remaining lives confined in small cages, except when they are experimented on.
They don't have a happier New Year to look forward to, especially now that the UW-Madison wants to increase its animal colony and lease a 20,000 sq ft building owned by Harlan Laboratories in Blue Mounds, because "there's not enough space to keep up with demand from researchers."

Did you also see Bill Lueders' 12/17 report about UW Veterinarian Richard Brown quitting because he complained about the animal care? http://www.thedailypage.com/isthmus/article.php?article=31607
Remember another UW veterinarian, Jennifer Hess, who in 2004 "raised concerns about the treatment of animals at the UW-Madison primate center"? http://www.thedailypage.com/isthmus/article.php?article=25890
And remember the 628 primate videotapes that got destroyed (shredded) when a request under the Wisconsin Open Records Statute was made for just one of them? www.thedailypage.com/isthmus/article.php?article=2012
Why does the UW continue to use and now want to even use more monkeys when we have sophisticated 21st century human-based and more human relevant methods available that don't require animals to be harmed to advance science?

This Thursday you can watch the March 15th Debate about the Ethics of Primate Research on www.wyou.org, online, livestream at http://www.wyou.org/ or Cable 95, or Digital 991 at 10 pm. (and the first hour of it will be repeated on Tues Dec 28th at 4am. The Daily Cardinal also has a short 8 minute clip of some highlights: http://vimeo.com/10199841

Please check out the video clips of Shawn Vougeot, a singer from Minneapolis, who I heard at the 2004 presentation here in Madison, when I learned what was really happening to the monkeys. Her band is participating in a holiday program this year and one of the songs she wrote for it, entitled "Dear Santa," is about asking Santa for homes for shelter animals.
They went to a local shelter and videotaped the animals for the backdrop for her performance. It's the third video down on the homepage of her website: http://www.singfortheanimals.com/ .
At the end of the song, the host of the show, Jack the Dog (puppet), reminds listeners that animals are not presents, and that it is important to know that you are ready to take care of an animal before adopting one. This show is being aired in over 70 cities in Minnesota.

Please share this information with others. These animals have no voice. They need ours to speak for them. Please do what you can to help them by informing others.
Thank you.
