Urge Your Senators to Support Fair Pay!
"Urge your senators to support the Fair Pay Restoration Act (S. 1843). It will be on the Senate floor for a vote early next week -- there is not a moment left to lose! The House has already passed the companion bill, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to correct the recent Supreme Court decision that guts the ability of women workers to sue for wage discrimination.
Celebrate Equal Pay Day, April 22nd, by contacting your senators today!
Lilly Ledbetter worked at Goodyear for nearly 20 years before she discovered that men in the same job were paid more. The Supreme Court ruled that wage discrimination complaints must be filed within 180 days of the initial discriminatory salary decision, even if the victim is unaware of the discrimination until much later. This 5-4 decision by the Bush Supreme Court reversed decades of precedent in wage discrimination cases decided under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
It is imperative that the Senate pass the Fair Pay Restoration Act, introduced by Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA), with Senators Hillary Clinton (D-NY), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), and Arlen Spector (R-PA)."
I had to take the link out - they are so eager to use the letter signer's personal info for fundraising that what info you give them to send the letter is locked in. The link I had will take you to my name and address. After you give them your name and email address, FM will send you endless fundraising ltrs usually for things they do not actually organize such as reproductive rights. They do nothing to protect our reproductive rights except take money from organizations that do. But to be fair - they are a great information source and can be supported for that.
Here is the letter. Cut and Paste. Call your Senators Office to get their email address.
Dear Senator_________________
I am writing to urge you to support S.1843, the Fair Pay Restoration Act, to correct the Supreme Court ruling in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. Ignoring decades of precedent under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Supreme Court's decision in the Ledbetter case severely limits women workers' ability to sue for wage discrimination.
The House has already passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, the companion bill to S.1843, and it is imperative that the Senate take immediate action to reverse the Supreme Court's assault on women's right to sue by passing the Fair Pay Restoration Act.
